The Page That Never Ends: How Websites Engineered Your Inability to Stop Scrolling
At some point in the last decade, web designers quietly removed the bottom of the internet. Not literally — the servers are still there, the data centers are humming along — but the experience of reaching the end of a page, that humble, dignified moment where content stopped and you were free to go touch grass, has been systematically eliminated. You didn't notice because it happened one auto-loading feed at a time.
Welcome to infinite scroll: the UX pattern that looks like a convenience and functions like a roach motel.
The Footer That Disappeared
Remember footers? That neat little section at the bottom of a webpage with contact info, a sitemap, maybe a copyright notice from 2009 that nobody updated? Footers were, in their quiet way, a social contract. They told you: this is where the page ends. You've seen what we have to offer. You can leave now.
Modern social platforms looked at that contract and tore it up.
Infinite scroll — pioneered in its current form by Aza Raskin in 2006 for a social media application — was designed to eliminate the friction of clicking 'Next Page.' Raskin himself has since publicly expressed regret about the invention, estimating it wastes roughly 200,000 collective human hours every single day. That's not a feature. That's a hostage situation with better typography.
The mechanics are straightforward: as you approach the bottom of a feed, a JavaScript call fires off, fetches another batch of content, and appends it before you ever hit a natural stopping point. The page grows beneath your fingers like some kind of digital kudzu. There is no bottom. There is only more.
It's Not a Bug. It's the Entire Business Model.
Here's where things get uncomfortable. Infinite scroll isn't a side effect of modern web architecture — it's a revenue strategy wearing a UX costume.
Engagement time is the metric that feeds the advertising beast. Every extra second you spend on a platform is another opportunity to serve you an ad, harvest a behavioral data point, or nudge you toward a sponsored post disguised as content. When platforms report 'daily active users' and 'average session length' to their investors, those numbers are built, brick by brick, from the seconds you spent scrolling past content you didn't particularly want to see.
The design choices that enable this are almost insultingly clever once you recognize them:
- Autoplay video kicks in the moment a clip enters your viewport, because motion captures attention faster than static content.
- Variable reward scheduling — the same psychological mechanism behind slot machines — means occasionally you'll hit a piece of content that genuinely delights you. That intermittent reward keeps you pulling the lever.
- Invisible loading states use skeleton screens and smooth animations to make new content appear seamlessly, removing any visual cue that a thing just happened and you could, theoretically, stop here.
- Notification badges on the same app create a loop: scroll, feel slightly empty, check notifications, get a dopamine hit, return to scrolling.
This isn't speculation. Former employees at Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have described internal metrics dashboards specifically tracking scroll depth and session abandonment rates, with design iterations evaluated on whether they increased or decreased the time before a user left. Leaving was a problem to be solved.
The Psychology of 'Just One More'
B.J. Fogg, a behavioral scientist at Stanford who essentially wrote the textbook on persuasive technology, describes a model where behavior happens when motivation, ability, and a trigger converge at the same moment. Infinite scroll is a masterclass in keeping all three perpetually aligned.
Motivation: you might find something interesting. Ability: moving your thumb one centimeter. Trigger: the feed is always there, always loaded, always waiting.
The result is what researchers have started calling 'mindless scrolling' — a dissociative state where you're technically interacting with a screen but not really making decisions. You're not choosing to keep reading. You've just stopped choosing to stop.
That distinction matters. Web design that removes the moment of conscious decision-making isn't serving users. It's bypassing them.
Some Platforms Blinked First
To be fair — and BadrWeb is nothing if not grudgingly fair — there have been some halting, PR-friendly gestures toward acknowledging the problem.
Instagram experimented with hiding like counts (briefly, and then mostly abandoned it). YouTube added a 'Take a Break' reminder that approximately zero people have ever used voluntarily. TikTok introduced a daily screen time limit that defaults to off and requires you to set it yourself, which is a bit like a casino offering earplugs at the entrance.
Apple and Google baked screen time dashboards into iOS and Android, respectively. These are genuinely useful tools — and platforms absolutely hate that you have them. Notice how no major social app has ever designed its own interface to encourage you to check your screen time and act on what you find.
The Web You Deserve Has a Bottom
There's a version of the internet where pages end. Where you read an article, reach the last paragraph, and the site politely says: that's all we've got, come back tomorrow. Where a feed shows you the posts from people you follow, and when you've seen them all, it stops — because there's nothing left to show you.
That web existed. It was called RSS, and Google killed it in 2013 when it shut down Google Reader, and the entire industry nodded along because algorithmic feeds were so much better for engagement.
The infinite scroll isn't a design pattern. It's a philosophical stance: your time is a resource to be extracted, not a thing you own. And until platforms face regulatory pressure, advertiser backlash, or a genuine cultural shift in how users value their own attention, the page will keep loading.
