The Illusion of Progress
Infinite scroll works on a beautifully simple lie: the page never ends, so you never have to make a decision. No pagination, no 'Next Page' button, no moment of friction where your brain has to consciously choose to continue. You just... keep going. Like a treadmill that also serves you content about treadmills.
The problem isn't the scrolling itself. It's what happens the moment you try to leave.
Click on an article halfway down your Twitter — sorry, X — feed. Read it. Hit the back button. Congratulations, you're now at the top of your feed, staring at posts from six hours ago, with zero indication of where you were or how to return. The platform didn't forget where you were. It just decided that information wasn't useful to you. It was, however, extremely useful to them — because now you have to scroll again.
This is not an accident. This is architecture.
Your Browser History Is Now Meaningless Noise
Open your browser history right now. Go ahead. If you've spent any meaningful time on a social platform, a news aggregator, or a modern e-commerce site, what you'll find is not a useful record of your browsing. You'll find the same URL listed forty-seven times, each entry representing a slightly different scroll position that your browser has absolutely no way to distinguish between.
The URL — that humble string of characters that used to represent a place on the internet — has been functionally broken by infinite scroll. When a page is dynamically loaded as you scroll, the address bar often doesn't change. You're technically at the same URL whether you're looking at post number three or post number three hundred. The web's entire addressing system, the thing that makes linking and sharing and finding things again possible, gets treated like a suggestion.
Bookmarking a specific piece of content on an infinite scroll page is roughly as effective as bookmarking 'somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.'
Who Profits From Your Disorientation
Let's be honest about the incentive structure here, because it's not subtle.

Your act of sharing content becomes an act of delivering new eyeballs to the platform's ad inventory.
The web's original architecture was built on the hyperlink — the idea that content could be precisely referenced, shared, and returned to. Infinite scroll treats that architecture the way a toddler treats a completed puzzle.
The Pagination That Nobody Misses (But Should)
Here's a sentence you never expected to read on a technology website: pagination was good, actually.
Page numbers were clunky. They were a little ugly. They required an extra click. They also meant that if someone told you 'the good stuff is on page four,' you could go to page four. You could bookmark page four. You could send someone a link to page four. Page four existed as a discrete, returnable location in space.
The death of pagination was sold as a usability improvement — fewer clicks, smoother experience, more natural browsing. What it actually delivered was a browsing experience that is smoother in the same way that a hallway with no doors is smoother. Sure, you're never fumbling with a handle. You're also never getting into any of the rooms.
Some platforms have made half-hearted attempts to address this. Instagram will occasionally remember where you were in a feed. Reddit's redesign introduced some URL-based position tracking. But these feel less like genuine solutions and more like someone throwing a life preserver at a person they just pushed off a boat.
The Research Problem Nobody's Talking About
For casual scrolling, losing your place is annoying. For anyone trying to use the web as a research tool, it's actively hostile.
Journalists, academics, and anyone trying to document an evolving story on social media have spent years developing workarounds for this problem — screenshot everything immediately, because the URL is worthless. Archive links obsessively, because the content might disappear and you'll have no way to prove it existed. Copy-paste text into separate documents, because there's no reliable way to return to a specific post through normal navigation.
These are not the workflows of a functional information system. These are the coping mechanisms of people working around a broken one.
The web's navigation layer was supposed to be one of its great democratizing features — the idea that any piece of information could be precisely located and referenced by anyone, anywhere. Infinite scroll didn't just make that inconvenient. It made it structurally impossible for entire categories of content.
Fix It. Please. We're Begging.
The technical solutions here are not complicated. URL fragments can track scroll position. Platforms can restore your position on navigation. Content can be given stable, linkable identifiers even within a dynamic feed. These are solved problems. Engineers know how to do this.
What they lack is the business directive to implement it — because a web that's easier to navigate is a web that's easier to leave. And leaving, as far as the platforms are concerned, is the only thing worse than not arriving in the first place.
Until that incentive structure changes, your back button will remain a button that mostly lies to you. Click it and watch your carefully scrolled position evaporate. Watch your browser deposit you at the top of a page you've already consumed. Watch the platform smile, because you're scrolling again.
